Louis H. Sullivan : The Banks
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (March, 1988)
Author: Lauren S. Weingarden
Average review score:

An amazing insight into the Banks of Sullivan
I think this book displays everything and anything you want or need to know about Sullivan's Banks. I found this most helpful in doing a research report on Sullivan and there is no other book as comprehensive in outlying his plans, goals, features, and works. If you find this book and you are interested in Sullivan or his architecture...buy it!

Louis Sullivan and the Chicago School
Published in Hardcover by Crescent Books (November, 1991)
Author: Nancy Frazier
Average review score:

What might have been
It was a tragic loss to all of us when the International architectural style swept through.

Louis Sullivan and the Chicago School shows the richly decorated, interesting surfaces that were replaced by the International style's boring expanses of glass. Buy a copy of this book and savor images of buildings we don't make anymore.

Louis Sullivan Prophet of Modern Architecture
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1987)
Author: Hugh Morrison
Average review score:

A classic in architectural history!
Timothy J. Samuelson, Curator of Architecture at the Chicago Historical Society, has done a marvelous job at bringing out a beautiful new edition of this classic on modernist pioneer Louis Sullivan. Samuelson has written a perceptive and entertaining introduction to the book, and given an invaluable revised list of Sullivan's work along with vastly improved illustrations. Hugh Morrison first published this groundbreaking study in 1935, and it is still the starting place for learning about Sullivan. Morrison's writing is fresh and entertaining, and moves along at times almost like a novel. More importantly, Morrison's analysis and history of Sullivan's architecture remains solid and convincing.

Maata's Journal : A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (01 February, 2003)
Author: Paul Sullivan
Average review score:

I Never Knew...
That the Inuits were taken from their Arctic tundra to settlement camps by the Canadian government. Maata's family is forced to leave their home and they are rudely dumped in a freezing and empty place and basically left to die. There is, however, plenty of alcohol. It is easy to see what the government hoped was in store for all the Inuits. In this story, they do have their champions. These come in the form of explorers who are there to learn the Inuit ways and map and study the area. Although it is freezing and harsh, we are able to see the amazing beauty of life and the cold landscape. We understand why Maata's mother wants her to learn both her own and the English way of life. She will be a bridge for both worlds. When the explorers take Maata to be their guide on an expedition, all is almost lost.
I enjoyed going along with Maata on all her journeys.

Mandatory Package- Roberts text + Sullivan Parasitology CD-ROM
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math (17 October, 2000)
Authors: Larry S. Roberts, John T. Sullivan, and John Janovy
Average review score:

The best available
This excellent text which is now in its 6th edition is probably the best general coverage of the science of parasitology available. I teach parasitology at the university level, which means that I have surveyed the competition. For completeness, abundance of relevant illustrations, and well-written coverage, this book is the best I have seen. I reviewed parts of the book for the publisher prior to this latest edition, and I believe that this latest edition is significantly better that the 5th. One point I should make is that this is not a clinical parasitology text covering only parasites of humans and our domesticated animals, nor is it a medical guide to treatment. Rather it is an excellent and broad coverage of the strange and interesting world of the parasites of animals.

Martyn Green's Treasury of Gilbert and Sullivan
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (January, 1985)
Author: Arthur Sullivan
Average review score:

If you Only Have One Book
Martyn Green was one of the Great D'oyly Carte patter singers. This book has the libretti of all of the shows, except for Utopia and Grand Duke, and Simary arrangements of the music. It is a great first book for any lover of G&S and a must have for anyone with any interest in G&S.

If there would be a criticism, it would be the relative lack of explainations of some of the more obscure words in the cannon, but this can be remedied by reference to the Harry Benford Lexicon (also available from Amazon). And the little bits about production practice which litter the libretti, more than make up for this.

The other drawback is the absurd decision not to keep this book in print.

Martyn Green's Treasury of Gilbert and Sullivan: The Complete Librettos of Eleven Operettas the Words and Music of One Hundred and Two Favorite songs
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (Paper) (October, 1985)
Author: Martyn Green
Average review score:

A Great G&S Book
This book was my first exposure to Gilbert and Sullivan, and this book can take a large part of the credit for my continued love of G&S. The book contains the libretti of all but two of the Operetta's (sadly lacking in Grand Duke and Utopia, Ltd) which are annotated with explainations of some of the terms, and comments from Martyn Green, both about how D'Oyly Carte performed it as well as personal recollections. The book also contains wonderful illustrations by Lucile Cocoros and Piano Transcriptions of a number of songs by Alfred Sirmay. (The Piano transcriptions and the Cocoros illustrations are recycled from the 1941 Deems Taylor G&S Volume.. this one is MUCH better because of the libretti and the fact that Green, unlike Taylor, clearly loved the work of G&S and didn't appear to have an axe to grind because the public didn't like his compositions as well as that of Sullivan...) It is a criminal shame that this book has been allowed to go out of print. It is becoming harder and harder to find and is a very important part of anyone who likes G&S's library..

Measures of Effectiveness for the Information-Age Navy: The Effects of Network-Centric Operations on Combat Operations
Published in Paperback by Rand Corporation (May, 2002)
Authors: Walt L. Perry, Thomas J. Sullivan, Jerome Bracken, and Robert W. Button
Average review score:

Great novel approach
This is a great new approach to determining the impact of information on the outcomes of military combat. The results of this work are well presented, allowing the reader to understand how the theory can be applied outside the example scenarios presented.

Melody for Nora: One Girl's Story in the Civil War
Published in Paperback by Interlink Pub Group (March, 1998)
Author: Mark O'Sullivan
Average review score:

complex history brought alive by good storytelling
Mark O'Sullivan is one of ireland's most highly regarded writers for young people. This, his first book, was the very first winner of the prestigious Eilis Dillon Memorial Award for children's literature.

Melody for Nora uses a strong, well-told story to bring alive the often-confusing complexities of Civil War Ireland in a manner rarely seen. The book is very much about people, and the people are interesting and lifelike. But at the same time the book shows the ironies and tragedies inherent in any civil war, with conflicting loyalties and the ghosts of past actions haunting the participants.

Mark O'Sullivan has gone on to write further good books, and his reputation continues to grow, but Melody for Nora remains one of his strongest works. Few first novels are as professionally done, and even fewer as readable. The book, set during a terrible time in Ireland's history, will be one for the history books itself, since it marked the emergence of a major irish writer.
